THE SECURITY LAWS ARE CHANGING!!!

The Private Security Act 2001

The new legislation outlines a system for the statutory regulation of the private security industry which will standardise and professionalise the Security Industry and regulate previously unregulated occupations. If you are associated with the following industries, it is highly likely that you will be affected by the legislative changes, which will come into affect on the 6th of March 2006 when it will become illegal to work in the following industries without a Security Industry Authority (SIA) Licence.

  • CASH AND VALUABLES IN TRANSIT
  • PUBLIC SPACE SURVEILLANCE CCTV OPERATORS
  • SECURITY GUARDING

It is currently illegal to work within the following industries without an SIA Licence:

  • DOOR SUPERVISORS BOTH IN-HOUSE AND SUPPLIED UNDER CONTRACT
  • VEHICLE IMMOBILISERS ON PRIVATE LAND BOTH IN-HOUSE AND SUPPLIED UNDER CONTRACT
  • KEY HOLDERS SUPPLIED UNDER CONTRACT
  • EVENTS AND LICENSING

The SIA is expecting to begin licensing private investigators and security consultants in 2006. They will be conducting
extensive consultations with industry stakeholders in due course.
